根據報導，Apple 和 GlobalFoundries 間的合作可能不如想像中緊密。

Apple 12 日傳出將和 GlobalFoundries 簽約，生產 iOS 裝置所使用的晶片，以擺脫對 Samsung 的依賴。不過根據 AllThingsD 的消息來源指出 Apple 和 GlobalFoundries 之間的合作可能沒有想像中緊密，僅是為了讓 Samsung 生產晶片時，可以擁有更彈性的產能。

消息來源說，比較有可能的情況是，Samsung 仍將會是 Apple iPhone 和 iPad 晶片的主要生產廠商，持續擔任他們從 iPhone 推出以來一直扮演的角色：在合約內生產 Apple 設計的晶片（也就是業界所說的晶圓代工）。

根據熟知詳情的人士指出合約內容大致如下：Samsung 將使用 GlobalFoundries 作為「彈性產能」，這是晶圓代工業長久以來都有的作法，晶片生產商在自己的工廠產能不足時，偶爾會付費以使用其他公司的廠房。

就 AllThingsD 的報導來看，Apple 和 Samsung 之間的關係仍會保持原狀。Samsung 還是會為 Apple 生產晶片，GlobalFoundries 僅是產能不足時的備案。
