不久前才有消息透露微軟Windows 8.1將於8月底左右提供RTM版本給予OEM廠商，使其可著手生產採用Windows 8.1的硬體產品。而目前消息也指出微軟將在今年10月中旬開放Windows 8.1版本更新，並不會特別先透過MSDN或TechNet提供下載。

根據ZDNet網站記者Mary Jo Foley引述消息來源表示，微軟最快將在今年10月中旬開放下載Windows 8.1更新，同時並不會特別先讓MSDN或TechNet訂閱用戶先行下載。同時，就先前消息指出OEM廠商將在8月底左右取得Windows 8.1 RTM版本，以便先行生產Windows 8.1相關硬體產品。

微軟在今年6月間的Build 2013期間釋出Windows 8.1 Preview版本，讓一般使用者、開發者均能搶先體驗更新後的Windows 8具體功能，包含重新加入的「開始」按鍵、可於開機後直接進入傳統桌面模式，以及針對動態磚介面提供更多元的設定顯示模式等，同時也將Bing、SkyDrive緊密地與Windows平台整合。
