先前ZDNet記者Mary Jo Foley透露微軟將於10月中旬後釋出Windows 8.1正式版本更新，目前微軟方面也證實將在紐西蘭時間10月18日凌晨12點釋出 (相當台灣時間17日晚間8點)，同時也將自18日開放Windows 8.1零售版本進行銷售。

根據微軟官方部落格表示，證實將在紐西蘭時間10月18日凌晨12點 (即台灣時間17日晚間8點)釋出Windows 8.1正式版本更新內容，藉時將可讓Windows 8使用者透過線上免費下載更新。同時，預計從18日起開放全球各地通路銷售Windows 8.1零售版本，而新一批出貨的PC硬體也將預載Windows 8.1。

新版Windows 8.1在今年6月間已經開放預覽版本提供試用，同時就先前市場說法也指出微軟將在8月中旬向OEM廠商提供RTM版本，以便在接下來出貨的新款硬體產品搭載Windows 8.1版本。

至於新版Windows 8.1將重新加入「開始」按鍵，並且將Bing、SkyDrive等微軟本身服務緊密整合，同時也針對Windows 8提供多種功能更新，並且開放小尺寸、低解析度的Windows硬體規格。
